nov 2; sunday morning

each day in paris was full, starting early and ending late. with most other cities, it wasn’t as necessary to get out so early and come in so late, but with paris it was very natural as there was so much to see. [and the early night hours weren't as much of an initiation to get back to the hotel, for paris at night [in marais] was welcoming and felt very safe]

this sunday i left the hostel
[the only hostel i liked; 'mije hostels'--they operate three hostels in marais and are exceptionally clean. they don't give towels, but the showers are only shared with a few people and they make your beds. they're about $30 a night, and are right in the centre of paris, virtually on the seine. everyone is very sweet, and everything is very safe.]
before 8a, but since it was sunday the streets were fairly abandoned and the city was very much mine for a few hours… it was exceptionally beautiful. weaving through the streets on the way to the cemetery i found the bastille market….

from the hostel window

a little papery person i liked, also from the window

the red wheelbarrow bookstore, which i visited later in the evening. here i found swados, wallant, and kerouac.

wandering around the place des vosges, before the hugo museum opened. i tried to go the museum three times before arriving at a time and on a day when it was open.

in a shop window which wasn’t open. there wasn’t anyone around at all, either… but these were lit. later, on my third try to visit hugo, the store was open but the candles were no longer alight.
